A fixed-size chew delivers far more per pound to a 7 lb Yorkie than to a 45 lb mixed breed. That is why the best small-dog products either come in a small-dog version or let you give half a chew. Below we work out rough mg-per-lb figures from each label so you can compare.
Our picks
Nutramax Solliquin (Small to Medium Dogs and Cats)
Solliquin's small-dog version lists 35 mg L-theanine, 75 mg magnolia and phellodendron extracts, and 25 mg whey protein per chew. The chart starts at half a chew up to 8 lb, one chew up to 15 lb, and two up to 30 lb. A 6 lb dog on half a chew gets about 17.5 mg L-theanine, near 3 mg per lb. The large-dog version is much stronger, so do not buy it for a small dog. The small/medium amounts and chart are confirmed on the maker's page.

Pet Naturals Calming
This high-confidence label lists 8.5 mg L-theanine, 65 mg thiamine and 9 mg colostrum per chew in the dogs-and-cats version, with one chew for any dog up to 50 lb. For a 10 lb dog that is under 1 mg L-theanine per lb, a gentle starting point. The label allows doubling or tripling under stress, so you can step up in whole chews. It contains no melatonin.

VetIQ Calming Support
VetIQ's current label lists 20 mg L-theanine, 30 mg L-tryptophan, 60 mg chamomile, 60 mg thiamine, 20 mg passionflower and 0.25 mg melatonin per chew. The older formula had lavender and no melatonin, so check which bag you have. Its chart is one of the few with a specific instruction for 5 to 15 lb dogs: one chew every other day, which averages half a chew per day. At 0.25 mg melatonin per chew, that is about 0.13 mg a day on average for a 5 to 15 lb dog. It also contains L-tryptophan, so check with your vet if your dog takes a serotonin-affecting drug.

How we chose
We research labels; we are not vets and we do not test products on dogs. For small dogs we looked for disclosed amounts, small-dog dosing bands or half-chew instructions, and medium or high data confidence. We left out Finn Calming Aid as a small-dog pick despite its clear label, because its 1 mg melatonin per chew is above weight-based melatonin references for dogs under about 20 lb. For the same reason we left out ThunderBites Calm + Probiotic: it has 1.5 mg melatonin per chew, a meaningful dose for a small dog, so ask your vet first, especially for small dogs, puppies, pregnant dogs and dogs on medication. (The original ThunderBites Calming Chews have 10 mcg melatonin per chew.) We also passed over Solid Gold Keep Calm because its 115 mg proprietary blend hides the individual amounts. Ratings and prices were not considered.
Dosing plan for small dogs
| Dog weight | Solliquin S/M | Pet Naturals | VetIQ |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 8 lb | 1/2 chew | 1 chew | 1 chew every other day (from 5 lb) |
| 9 to 15 lb | 1 chew | 1 chew | 1 chew every other day |
| 16 to 30 lb | 2 chews | 1 chew | 1 chew |
Figures are from the label charts as we recorded them. Always follow the package you actually buy.
- Start low. Begin at the lowest labeled dose and watch for a few days before increasing.
- Cut cleanly. Halve soft chews with a knife and reseal the bag. Hard or dried chews can be a choking risk for tiny dogs, so break them into small pieces. Our durability page covers chew texture and storage.
- Count every source. If you also use a calming treat or food topper, add up the L-theanine, tryptophan and melatonin from all of them.
- Pair with behavior work. A covered crate or small bed in a quiet room gives a small dog a safe space. Reward calm behavior, and use slow desensitization for specific triggers such as the doorbell.
Call your vet if your dog is unusually sleepy or wobbly, vomits, has diarrhea that lasts more than a day, or if anxiety includes aggression or self-injury. Toy breeds can become dehydrated or develop low blood sugar faster than larger dogs, so do not wait out repeated vomiting. Dogs with severe anxiety may need prescription medication, which your vet will dose by weight.
Chew size and texture
Size matters as much as dose for toy breeds. Most soft chews in this category are sized for a 25 to 50 lb dog, so a 5 lb Chihuahua may struggle with a whole one even when the label allows it. Soft chews are easier to split and less of a choking risk than hard biscuits or air-dried pieces. If your dog bolts food, cut the dose into pea-sized bits or press it into a small amount of wet food. Keep the bag sealed and cool, because soft chews that dry out turn hard and crumbly, which makes accurate halving harder. Check the bag for a lot number and expiry date, and toss chews that smell off or have changed color.
Ingredient background: L-theanine, L-tryptophan, melatonin, and thiamine and colostrum.
Frequently asked questions
Can I cut a calming chew in half for my small dog?
Usually yes for soft chews, and some labels, like Solliquin's, build half-chew dosing into the chart. Cut with a clean knife and store the other half sealed in the bag. If the actives are not evenly mixed, halves may differ slightly, which matters most for chews that contain melatonin.
How much melatonin is too much for a small dog?
Weight-based references use about 0.1 mg per kg for calming, which is roughly 0.2 to 0.7 mg for a 5 to 15 lb dog. A 1 mg chew is above that range for the smallest dogs. Ask your vet before using a melatonin chew in a toy breed, and see our melatonin guide.
Are cat calming chews safe for small dogs?
Some products, like Pet Naturals Calming, are labeled for both dogs and cats, so that is fine within the label's dose. Do not cross over products labeled for cats only, since their dosing assumptions differ. Never give human supplements, which may contain xylitol, a sweetener that is toxic to dogs.
Why do small dogs need different calming chews?
Small dogs get a bigger dose per pound from any fixed-size chew, and large chews can be hard for tiny mouths to manage. Products with half-chew bands, smaller per-chew amounts, and size-specific versions let you start low and adjust in small steps, which is the safest way to find what helps.
