Fireworks are one of the few stressors you can see coming weeks in advance. That makes them a good fit for a plan: behavior work first, the right chew at the right time, and a prescription backup for dogs that truly panic.
Our picks
Finn Calming Aid
Finn lists every active with an amount: 25 mg L-theanine, 1 mg melatonin, 40 mg L-tryptophan, plus chamomile, passion flower, valerian and ginger. The label says to give it 30 to 60 minutes before the stressor, which fits a known fireworks start time, and the weight bands run in whole chews per 25 lb. Our data confidence for this label is high. Melatonin is sometimes used off-label for noise fears; see our melatonin guide for dose ranges.

VetriScience Composure
Composure pairs 21 mg L-theanine with 134 mg thiamine and 22 mg of the colostrum calming complex per chew, and contains no melatonin. The colostrum and theanine components have a small body of published research (see our thiamine and colostrum page). It suits owners who want to start several days before the holiday. It is now sold as Calm & Confident (Composure formula), and we have high confidence in these label amounts.

Pet Naturals Calming
Pet Naturals publishes its formula on the manufacturer page, so we rate the data high confidence: 8.5 mg L-theanine, 65 mg thiamine and 9 mg colostrum per chew in the small-dog and cat version, with a stronger version for bigger dogs. The label allows doubling or tripling under stress, which gives some room on a long fireworks night. The per-chew theanine is low, so expect a modest effect.

Quiet Moments is a lower-melatonin option: per chew the label lists 60 mcg melatonin, 15 mg L-tryptophan, 75 mg chamomile, 50 mg thiamine, 50 mg passion flower and 50 mg ginger. It is labeled for 30 minutes before a stressful event. The chart is 1 chew up to 26 lb, 2 at 27 to 50 lb, 4 at 51 to 99 lb and 6 at 100 lb and over.

How we chose
We are researchers, not veterinarians, and we did not try these products on dogs. We ranked chews by what the label discloses, how confident we are in that label data, whether the timing instructions fit a scheduled event, and whether the ingredients have any published canine evidence. We passed over products that hide amounts in a proprietary blend, such as Solid Gold Keep Calm (a 115 mg blend with no individual amounts), and products where our data confidence is low. Star ratings and prices played no part.
Fireworks plan: what to do and when
A 2023 review of noise-fear treatments (Therapy and Prevention of Noise Fears in Dogs: a review of the current evidence (Animals, 2023)) found the strongest evidence for prescription drugs and behavior work, and weaker evidence for supplements. Use chews as one layer, not the whole plan.
- 3 to 6 weeks out. If your dog has panicked during past fireworks (escaping, self-injury, heavy drooling, refusing food), book a vet visit now. Ask about Sileo, the dexmedetomidine gel that was the first FDA-approved drug for canine noise aversion, or trazodone. Some drugs need a test dose on a quiet day first.
- 2 to 4 weeks out. Start desensitization: play firework sounds very quietly while feeding treats, raising the volume only while your dog stays relaxed. Lower the volume at any sign of worry.
- 5 to 7 days out. If you use a daily-style chew such as Composure or Pet Naturals, start it now at the label dose. This also reveals any stomach upset before the big night.
- Day of the event. Walk your dog in daylight, before fireworks start. Check that the collar and ID tag fit and microchip details are current; the ASPCA and AVMA both note that pets often bolt on July 4th.
- 30 to 60 minutes before. Give an event chew such as Finn or Quiet Moments. Close curtains, turn on steady background sound, and set up a safe space in an interior room with bedding and a long-lasting chew toy.
- During. Stay home if you can. Let your dog hide where it likes and comfort it if it seeks you. Do not exceed the label's maximum dose.
Call your vet if your dog vomits repeatedly, seems very wobbly or unusually sedated after a chew, injures itself trying to escape, or stays fearful for more than a day afterward. For possible poisoning, including eaten fireworks, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control line is (888) 426-4435.

Frequently asked questions
How many days before fireworks should I start calming chews?
For theanine, thiamine and colostrum chews like Composure or Pet Naturals, five to seven days of daily use before the holiday is a reasonable trial that also shows how your dog's stomach handles them. Melatonin chews like Finn are labeled for 30 to 60 minutes before the stressor, so loading days matter less.
Is it safe to use a calming chew and Sileo together?
Ask your vet first. Sileo is a prescription drug dosed by weight, and your vet will want to know every supplement your dog gets. Chews without melatonin or tryptophan add fewer variables, but the decision belongs to the prescribing vet, not to a product label or a buying guide like this one.
Is it okay to comfort my dog during fireworks?
Yes. Current behavior guidance does not support the old idea that comforting a fearful dog rewards the fear. Calm talking, gentle contact if your dog seeks it, and letting the dog hide wherever it chooses are all fine. Forcing a frightened dog out of its hiding spot is not helpful.
Are calming chews enough for a dog that panics?
Usually not. A dog that trembles, drools, tries to escape, or injures itself is showing panic, and the published evidence for supplements at that level is thin. That is the point to ask your vet about prescription options such as Sileo or trazodone, ideally several weeks before the holiday.
