What's in NaturVet Quiet Moments
NaturVet lists its active ingredients per 2 soft chews (4.4 g), not per chew. We read the label on the maker's product page on 2026-10-11 and split the numbers so you can compare them with other brands.
| Active | Per 2 chews (label) | Per 1 chew |
|---|---|---|
| Chamomile | 150 mg | 75 mg |
| Thiamine (vitamin B1) | 100 mg | 50 mg |
| Passion flower | 100 mg | 50 mg |
| Ginger | 100 mg | 50 mg |
| L-tryptophan | 30 mg | 15 mg |
| Melatonin | 120 mcg | 60 mcg |
What each active does, and how strong the evidence is
- Melatonin. A sleep-related hormone some vets use for noise fears. A 2023 review of noise-fear treatments and a review of melatonin in dogs both describe the evidence as mostly case reports and small studies, not large controlled trials. Merck lists 3 to 6 mg per dog (for hair-loss disorders), and calming references use about 0.1 mg/kg, roughly 1.8 mg for a 40 lb dog, far above the 0.06 mg per chew here. See our melatonin guide.
- L-tryptophan. An amino acid the body uses to make serotonin. Dog data are limited and mixed, and 15 mg per chew is a small amount. More in our L-tryptophan page.
- Thiamine. Vitamin B1, included for nervous system support. There is little direct evidence that extra thiamine calms dogs. See thiamine and colostrum.
- Chamomile and passion flower. Traditional calming botanicals with some human research but little dog-specific data. See chamomile and other botanicals.
- Ginger. Mainly there for stomach comfort, which can help on car rides.
How to give it
The label doses by body weight and says to give the chews 30 minutes before the stressful situation. Do not exceed double the recommended amount in 12 hours.
| Dog weight | Chews per dose | Melatonin per dose |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 26 lb | 1 | 60 mcg |
| 27 to 50 lb | 2 | 120 mcg |
| 51 to 99 lb | 4 | 240 mcg |
| 100 lb and up | 6 | 360 mcg |
Daily or as needed?
The directions are built around events: a vet visit, a storm, a road trip, fireworks. That makes it an as-needed product. If your dog seems anxious most days, a chew given before events is unlikely to be enough, and a vet visit is the better first step.
How long a jar lasts
NaturVet lists 65, 70, 180, and 240 count sizes. Full doses per jar, based on the label amounts:
| Jar | Up to 26 lb | 27 to 50 lb | 51 to 99 lb | 100+ lb |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 65 ct | 65 | 32 | 16 | 10 |
| 70 ct | 70 | 35 | 17 | 11 |
| 180 ct | 180 | 90 | 45 | 30 |
| 240 ct | 240 | 120 | 60 | 40 |
For a large dog through a stormy summer, the bigger jars make more sense. For a small dog that needs it for a few trips a year, a 65 ct jar may outlast its best-by date.
Does it work?
The evidence for this exact formula is thin. We found no published controlled trial of Quiet Moments itself. Each active has a plausible role, but the doses are low. The melatonin per chew is about 50 to 100 times lower than the 3 to 6 mg per dog that Merck lists, and the tryptophan is modest.
Realistic expectations:
- It may take the edge off mild, situational stress, such as a short car ride or a grooming visit.
- It is unlikely to calm a dog that panics, drools heavily, tries to escape, or destroys things during storms or fireworks.
- Results vary by dog. Try it before a minor event first so you know how your dog responds.
See your vet if fear is severe, getting worse, or causing injury, or if your dog takes any medication. Prescription options and behavior plans exist for noise phobia and separation anxiety, and they have stronger support than over-the-counter chews.
What to watch for
We did not find a source that summarizes owner reviews in a way we could cite, so this section is based on the label and ingredients.
- Taste and texture. It is a soft chew, which many dogs take like a treat, but picky dogs may refuse it. Hiding it in a small bite of food can help.
- Drowsiness. Melatonin, tryptophan, and the botanicals can make some dogs a little sleepy.
- Stomach upset. Any new chew can cause soft stool or vomiting in sensitive dogs. Stop if signs persist.
- Large-dog dosing. At 4 to 6 chews per dose, big dogs also get more inactive ingredients and calories.
Side effects, interactions, and who should avoid it
- Puppies under 12 weeks. The label limits use to dogs over 12 weeks.
- Pregnant or breeding dogs. The maker says safe use has not been proven.
- Medications. The label cautions against use with MAO inhibitors and sedatives. Tryptophan may also be a concern with other serotonin-affecting drugs, such as some anxiety medicines. Ask your vet first.
- Overdose. Do not give more than double the label amount within 12 hours.
NaturVet Hemp Quiet Moments
NaturVet also sells a separate Hemp Quiet Moments chew for dogs. The NaturVet product page describes hemp seed oil and hemp seed powder alongside thiamine, L-tryptophan, melatonin, and ginger, with the same weight bands and 30-minute timing. Hemp seed is not the same as CBD. Per the maker’s label (listed per 2 chews), each chew has 100 mg hemp seed oil, 100 mg hemp seed powder, 75 mg chamomile, 50 mg ginger, 50 mg passion flower, 30 mg thiamine, 15 mg L-tryptophan and 60 mcg melatonin: the same melatonin and tryptophan as the regular chew, with less thiamine.
Alternatives
- ThunderBites Original. A very similar formula with the same 6 actives at lower amounts. Per chew it has 10 mcg melatonin, 15 mg tryptophan, 50 mg chamomile, and 25 mg thiamine, versus 60 mcg, 15 mg, 75 mg, and 50 mg in Quiet Moments. Weight bands and timing match. See ThunderBites vs NaturVet for loud noises.
- Zesty Paws Calming Bites. No melatonin. It uses L-theanine and herbs, partly in an undisclosed blend, and is aimed at daily use. See Zesty Paws vs Quiet Moments.
- Composure or Calm & Confident style chews. These lean on L-theanine and colostrum rather than melatonin, and are often chosen when owners want a daily option without a sleep hormone.
For fireworks season, see our best calming chews for fireworks, and ask your vet which approach fits your dog.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take for NaturVet Quiet Moments to work?
NaturVet's label says to give the chews 30 minutes before the stressful situation, so that is the window the maker plans around. Effects from a low-dose melatonin and herbal chew tend to be mild. If you see no change across several events, the product may simply not be strong enough for your dog's level of fear.
Can I give my dog NaturVet Quiet Moments every day?
The label is written for use before stressful events, not as a fixed daily routine, and caps intake at double the recommended amount in 12 hours. Many owners use it only for storms, travel, or fireworks. If your dog needs help every day, ask your vet, since ongoing anxiety usually calls for a behavior plan.
How much melatonin is in NaturVet Quiet Moments?
The label lists 120 mcg melatonin per 2 soft chews, which works out to 60 mcg (0.06 mg) per chew. A dog over 100 lb taking 6 chews gets 360 mcg. That is well below the 3 to 6 mg per dog listed in the Merck Veterinary Manual or about 0.1 mg/kg used in calming references, so effects are likely to be gentle.
Will NaturVet Quiet Moments make my dog sleepy?
Some mild drowsiness is possible because the formula combines melatonin, L-tryptophan, chamomile, and passion flower, though the amounts are small. Watch your dog after the first dose, ideally on a quiet day. Talk to your vet before combining it with sedatives or other calming medicines, which the label specifically cautions against.
Is NaturVet Quiet Moments safe for puppies?
The label says it is for dogs over 12 weeks of age, so younger puppies should not get it. The maker also notes that safe use in pregnant or breeding animals has not been proven. For a young puppy with fear issues, early socialization and advice from your vet or a trainer matter more than a supplement.
