Who should skip melatonin
Melatonin is a hormone, and it shows up in many calming chews (see our melatonin guide). A melatonin-free chew makes sense for:
- Daytime use. Training classes, grooming, vet visits and workdays, when you want a calm but alert dog.
- Breeding, pregnant or nursing dogs. Melatonin influences reproductive hormones. No calming chew is tested in pregnancy, so ask your vet before using any supplement.
- Dogs on certain medications. Dogs on sedatives or anxiety drugs, dogs treated for hormone-related or blood-sugar conditions, and dogs already given melatonin by a vet for sleep or hair loss. Your vet should approve any add-on.
- Dogs that get groggy or have upset stomachs on melatonin products.
Watch for L-tryptophan too. It is not melatonin, but it feeds serotonin production, and vets are careful about combining it with serotonin-affecting drugs such as fluoxetine or trazodone. None of the four picks below lists tryptophan in the data we recorded. Composure Pro, by contrast, adds L-tryptophan, so read the variant name before you buy.
Our picks
VetriScience Composure
Composure lists 21 mg L-theanine, 134 mg thiamine and 22 mg colostrum calming complex per chew, with no melatonin and no tryptophan. Dosing runs one chew up to 50 lb, two up to 100 lb, and three above that. It is now sold as Calm & Confident (Composure formula), and we have high confidence in these label amounts. See our thiamine and colostrum page for the research behind that pairing.

Pet Naturals Calming
This is the most transparent label here (high confidence, from the manufacturer page): 8.5 mg L-theanine, 65 mg thiamine and 9 mg colostrum per chew in the dogs-and-cats version, with a stronger version for medium and large dogs. The label allows doubling or tripling under stress. Low per-chew amounts make it easy to start gently.

Nutramax Solliquin
Solliquin's small-to-medium version lists 35 mg L-theanine, 75 mg magnolia and phellodendron extracts and 25 mg whey protein per chew, with half-chew dosing for dogs up to 8 lb. The large-dog version lists 102 mg L-theanine and 225 mg of the botanical extracts. The small/medium chart is under 8 lb half a chew, 8 to 15 lb one chew, 16 to 30 lb two chews (confirmed on the maker's page). More on theanine in our L-theanine guide.

Non-chew alternative: Purina Calming Care
This is a powder, not a chew: one 1 g sachet a day of Bifidobacterium longum BL999, regardless of weight. The label says it can take up to 6 weeks for full effect, so it fits ongoing daily stress rather than a single event. It contains no melatonin, theanine or botanicals, which makes it the simplest formula here, but it is not one of our chew picks. Our confidence is high.

How we chose
We are label researchers, not veterinarians, and we did not test these products on dogs. We first removed every product with melatonin on the label, then removed those with proprietary blends that hide amounts (Solid Gold Keep Calm lists melatonin inside an undisclosed 115 mg blend). We favored medium or high data confidence and noted tryptophan content. Zesty Paws Calming Bites (turkey) is also melatonin-free, but we left it out because its L-theanine, valerian and L-tryptophan sit inside a 105 mg proprietary blend per chew with no individual amounts. The disclosed amounts per chew are chamomile 80 mg, hemp seed powder 50 mg, passionflower 45 mg, ginger 30 mg and ashwagandha 25 mg; it contains no thiamine. Ratings and prices played no role.
A melatonin-free calming plan
- Talk to your vet first if your dog takes any prescription drug, is pregnant or nursing, or has a hormone or metabolic condition. Bring the label or a photo of it.
- Pick daily or event use. For ongoing stress, try a daily product for several weeks before judging it. For a known event, start a theanine and colostrum chew a few days ahead.
- Change one thing at a time. Add one product, keep notes on sleep, appetite and reactions, and give it a fair trial.
- Do the behavior work. Desensitization and counterconditioning to specific triggers, a predictable routine, exercise, and a safe space do more for most anxious dogs than any supplement.
Call your vet if you see vomiting, diarrhea lasting more than a day, unusual sleepiness, tremors or agitation after starting a product, or if anxiety includes aggression, self-injury or destruction when left alone. Those dogs often need a behavior diagnosis and possibly prescription medication.
Reading the label for hidden melatonin
Melatonin is not always obvious. It may appear in micrograms rather than milligrams (120 mcg is 0.12 mg), and in some products it sits inside a "proprietary blend" or "calming complex" with no amount listed. Line extensions also differ: PetHonesty's standard Hemp Calming Chews list no melatonin in our data, while its Max Strength version adds 650 mcg. Native Pet Calm Chews list 5 mg melatonin per chew, and VetIQ Calming Support now lists 0.25 mg per chew (its older formula had none). All three ThunderBites chews contain melatonin too: 10 mcg per chew in the original and Hemp Calming Chews, 1.5 mg per chew in Calm + Probiotic. Before buying, read the supplement facts panel for the exact flavor and size you are ordering, not just the product family name, and ask the seller if a blend is not broken out.

Frequently asked questions
Why would a dog need a calming chew without melatonin?
Melatonin can cause drowsiness and affects reproductive hormones, so it may be a poor fit for daytime use, breeding or pregnant dogs, and some dogs on prescription drugs. Your vet may also prefer to control melatonin separately. A melatonin-free chew avoids doubling up when a vet already prescribes it.
Is L-tryptophan a problem with anxiety medications?
It can be. Tryptophan is a serotonin building block, and vets are cautious about combining it with drugs that raise serotonin, such as fluoxetine, clomipramine or trazodone. Composure, Pet Naturals and Solliquin do not list tryptophan on the labels we recorded. Always ask the prescribing vet before adding any chew.
Are melatonin-free calming chews safe during pregnancy?
No calming chew has been shown safe in pregnant dogs, with or without melatonin. Removing melatonin lowers one hormone-related concern but does not make a product pregnancy-tested. Talk to your vet before giving any supplement to a pregnant or nursing dog, and lean on environmental steps such as a quiet nesting area.
Do melatonin-free chews work as fast?
Claims vary. Composure Pro is claimed to work within 30 minutes, while Purina Calming Care is a probiotic that may take up to 6 weeks for full effect. Theanine and colostrum chews are often used daily or started days ahead. Match the product to whether you need daily support or one-off help.
